ANDY SAWYER/Yakima Herald-Republic Platt Parker remembers the day during WWII when a guard in charge of a group of German soldiers working in a beet field in Wapato fell asleep and one of the Germans grabbed the guard's gun in an attempt to escape. Parker, who was in school at the time and had the job of driving the German soldiers to the field, convinced the German not to try to flee.
