Here are this week's volunteer needs in the Yakima Valley:

* HOSPICE TEAM: Yakima Valley Memorial Hospice needs compassionate individuals to join its team. Volunteers will assist patients and families living with a terminal illness. Volunteers will have the opportunity to share time while supporting families in a variety of ways: caregiver relief, companionship and emotional support, light meal preparation, light house and yard work, medication deliveries, leisure activities and bereavement support.

Hospice training is required and conducted by Memorial's staff. The next volunteer training is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 16 and 17.

For more information, call Julie Fraser at 574-3655.

* EPIC HELPERS: EPIC's Central Washington Distribution Center is looking for volunteers to help provide goods to churches, schools and nonprofits to support their mission in the community and serve low-income families. Volunteers would greet customers, stock shelves, set up displays, take inventory, fill orders, help customers with orders and ensure the center runs smoothly.

Volunteers are needed two to three times a week, Mondays through Fridays, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. All potential volunteers must fill out a volunteer packet and have a criminal background check done by the agency.

Contact Sirena Phillips at 574-1933.

* EXERCISER HELPER: Chesterley Meadows of Yakima needs a volunteer to lead a "Sittercise" class with residents. The volunteer would direct 10 to 15 residents in light sit-down exercises. Audiotapes will be supplied and the volunteer will be given an orientation.

The volunteer is needed Mondays through Fridays from 9:30 to 10 a.m.

A volunteer is also needed to call Bingo Mondays through Fridays from 10 to 11 a.m.

All potential volunteers will need to fill out a volunteer application and have a criminal background check done by the agency.

For more information, call Debbie Scott 452-1010.

* WELLNESS HOUSE: Wellness House of Yakima needs receptionists. Volunteers will answer phones, greet clients and do other office duties as assigned by the staff. Training will be provided. Volunteers are needed from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fridays and from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursdays.

Wellness House provides hope to individuals diagnosed with cancer or other illnesses, and to their family members and friends. Volunteers should be sensitive, warm, caring and have an outgoing personality.

Potential volunteers should call Eunice at 575-6686.

* CASA VOLUNTEERS: Volunteers are needed to be advocates for abused and neglected children in the community. If you are willing to commit time to making a difference in the life of a child, you will be trained to serve as an independent advocate. CASA volunteers have a variety of professional, educational and ethnic backgrounds. No special experience is required. Volunteers are selected on the basis of their objectivity, competence and commitment.

Call Anna Martinez at Yakima County Juvenile Court CASA at 574-2068.

* CHORE SERVICES: Volunteer Chore Services provides basic in-home assistance to low-income elders and adults with disabilities to enable them to continue living safely, independently and with dignity in their own homes. Volunteers are needed to help build wheelchair ramps; provide transportation to doctor's appointments, grocery shopping and other such errands; and to provide light housekeeping.

For more information, call Lou Ann or Theresa 965-7105.

* Volunteer Opportunities is prepared by Sirena Phillips, volunteer coordinator of Yakima's Retired Senior Volunteer Program. Contact her at 574-1933, 120 S. Third St. Suite 200B, Yakima, WA 98901, or sirena.phillips@co.yakima.wa.us.
