Local report -- West Valley nabs district berth

YAKIMA -- Casey Croshaw pitched a three-hitter and drove in two runs as the West Valley Baseball Club beat the Kennewick Phantoms 13-5 in a playoff for the final Junior Legion district berth Wednesday at West Valley High School.

WVBC, 28-18, will open district play at 4 p.m. Friday against the Richland Knights at Richland. Other teams in its bracket are the Yakima Valley Peppers and Kennewick Bandits, who open the tournament at 1 p.m. Friday. The winners meet at 7.

In Wednesday's five-inning playoff, Jake Vetsch had three hits and four RBI, Lukas Hinton and Brad Andreas drove in two runs each and Mickey Onustock had three hits and an RBI.

YOUTH BASKETBALL

Yakima Elite wins in Main Event

LAS VEGAS -- Matt Borton scored 21 points, grabbed nine rebounds and had six assists as Yakima Elite defeated Texas Crossover 62-48 in the Nike Main Event basketball tournament Wednesday night.

Yakima plays the Shock from Washington, D.C. today.

 

Yakima scoring: Matt Borton 21, Wade Gebbers 6, Brady Brent 9, Eric Hutchinson 9, Malachi Roberts 5, Seth Brent 2, Cole Younger 4, Killian Larsen 6, Austin Bryan 0.

 

LITTLE LEAGUE

Selah loses at Junior State

MOUNT VERNON -- In a game pitting the lone remaining unbeaten teams, Columbia pulled away fora 14-6 victory over Selah National on Tuesday night in the Little League Juniors State Tournament.

Selah played Soundview in a loser-out game Wednesday, with the winner advancing to play Columbia in the final Thursday.

After falling behind 5-0 against Columbia, Selah rallied to tie the game in the fourth. But Columbia again took charge, scoring nine runs in the final three innings.

 

OFFICIALS

Football meeting Wednesday

The first meeting of the Yakima Valley Football Officials Association will be at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30 at the Yakima Police Department training room, which is located at 207 S. 3rd St., across from the main station.

The association is looking for anyone interested in officiating games this season. The group provides officials for games ranging from Grid Kids to high school varsity, and covers games from Mabton to Cle Elum.
