Local Golf Notes -- Cook, Wanderscheid earn trips to state

Eight locals, including Goldendale's Zach Wanderscheid in the boys' 16-17 age division and Eisenhower's Christine Cook in girls 16-17, earned trips to next week's Washington Junior Golf Association state tournament in Spokane with strong performances at this week's District 4 tourney.

Wanderscheid fired a 1-under 143 over his two district rounds Monday and Tuesday at Richland's Horn Rapids Golf Course, missing one stroke out of the lead. Cook shot 91-86--177, edging West Valley's Liz Tikriti (179) for the second and last qualifying spot on the girls side.

Other area golfers who qualified for state were Eric Gravbrot of Yakima (with a 2-over-par 146) and Minwoo Park of Tieton (151) in boys 14-15; Holden Backes, Austin Backes and Nathan Nulliner, all of Yakima, in boys 8-11; and Bree Wanderscheid of Goldendale, who won the girls 12-13 division at 87-82--169.

The state tournament will be next Wednesday through Friday in Spokane at Manito Country Club, Spokane Country Club and Wandermere Golf Course.

 

Boys 16-17: 1, Greg Prins (Walla Walla) 74-68--142; 2, Zach Wanderscheid (Goldendale) 73-70--143 (qualified for state--QFS); 9, Brad Donahue (Yakima) 76-69--155 (DNQ, first alternate for state); DNP -- R.J. Gunner (Selah) 80-77--157, Corey King (Yakima) 80-82--162, Steven Snipes (Yakima) 86-84--170, Nathan Bostrom (Yakima) 94-81--175.

Boys 14-15: 1, Scott Kim (Richland) 73-68--141; 2, Eric Gravbrot (Yakima) 73-73--146 (QFS); 5, Minwoo Park (Tieton) 74-77-- 151 (QFS); DNP -- Kameron Lamb (Yakima) 81-79--160.

Boys 12-13: 1, Ryan Baumgart (Walla Walla) 74-75--149; DNP -- Andrew Raab (Yakima) 89-94--183.

Boys 8-11: 1, Aaron Whalen (Ephrata) 42-38--80 (9 holes each day); 3, Holden Backes (Yakima) 44-45--89 (QFS); 4, Austin Backes (Yakima) 50-42--92 (QFS); 5, Nathan Nulliner (Yakima) 51-46--97 (QFS); 6, Joseph Fenich (Yakima) 47-52--99 (DNQ, first alternate for state); DNP -- Colton Dally (Selah) 57-48--105.

Girls 16-17: 1, Neddy Martinez (Pasco) 86-86--172; 2, Christine Cook (Yakima) 91-86--177 (QFS); 3 (DNQ), Liz Tikriti (Yakima) 91-88--179.

Girls 14-15: 1, Mary McDonald (Richland) 89-90--179; 3 (DNQ), Hannah Naughton (Yakima) 101-96--197.

Girls 12-13: 1, Bree Wanderscheid (Goldendale) 87-82--169 (QFS).

 

Landis records second ace

Al Landis scored his second career hole-in-one when he aced the 16th hole at SunTides Golf Course last Saturday. He used a 9-iron on the 135-yard shot.

LaRiviere aces at Apple Tree

Randy LaRiviere recorded a hole-in-one during last Wednesday's Men's Club event at Apple Tree Golf Course. He used a pitching wedge to ace the 127-yard 13th hole.

It was LaRiviere's second career hole-in-one.

Barry Woodard, Stan Hixson and Craig Hisey witnessed the shot.
