SALUTING OUR SERVICEMEN: Saturday night was Military Night at Yakima County Stadium, with the Bears paying tribute to men and women in all branches of U.S. service.

In addition to a UH-1 Medi-Vac helicopter, other military vehicles were in the Yakima County Stadium parking lot for fans' inspection prior to the game and the Bears wore camouflaged jerseys.

Saturday was also Boomer Bobblehead night, with the first 750 fans given a replica doll of the Yakima mascot wearing a military jersey.

SUMMERS VACATION: Houston Summers, originally scheduled to start Saturday night's game against Spokane, was sent to Tacoma to temporarily bolster a depleted Tucson Sidewinders' pitching staff. Tucson, the Arizona Diamondbacks' class AAA affiliate, used an inordinate number of pitchers in a recent 12-inning game. Summers was expected to rejoin the Bears during their five-game series at Vancouver, which opens tonight.

NEW ARRIVAL: Wade Miley, a left-handed pitcher from Southeastern Louisiana University (Hammond, La.), joined the Bears on Saturday, having been chosen as a sandwich pick in last month's draft. A sandwich pick is a compensation selection taken between the first and second rounds of the draft. The pick was awarded to the Arizona Diamondbacks as compensation for losing pitcher Livan Hernandez to the Minnesota Twins via free agency.

Miley, the 43rd player chosen, was born Nov. 13, 1986. He is 6-foot-2 and 195 pounds and hails from Independence, La.

FARM REPORT: Elsewhere in the Arizona Diamondbacks minor league system, according to standings and statistics prior to Saturday night: Tucson (Class AAA Pacific Coast League) was 41-59 and fourth in the four-team South Division; Mobile (Class AA Southern League) was 12-15 in the second half of the season and third in the South Division; Visalia (advanced Class A California League) 15-13 and second in the North Division's second-half standings; South Bend (long-season Class A Midwest League), 17-11 and tied for first in the Eastern Division's second-half standings; and Missoula (advanced rookie Pioneer League) 6-24 and fourth in the four-team North Division.

At South Bend, ex-Bear Collin Cowgill was batting .212
(7 for 33) through eight games with no homers and four runs batted in.
