Bears suffer another late collapse
Vancouver scores two in eighth to pull out win

Yakima Herald-Republic

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- The late-inning heartbreak continues for the Yakima Bears.

For the second time in four games, the Bears lost the lead in one of the final three innings, this time a two-run rally by the Vancouver Canadians in the eighth to claim a 3-2 victory Sunday night at Nat Bailey Stadium.

Yakima lost its third straight and fell to 12-21 this season. The five-game series continues tonight.

The Bears were poised to post a come-from-behind win Sunday when they took a 2-1 lead on Gerardo Bustamante's two-out RBI triple in the top of the eighth. That scored Anthony Smith, who reached on a one-out single.

But Vancouver answered right back in the bottom of the frame.

David Thomas opened with a single, and Jason Christian reached on a throwing error by third baseman Joseph Ayers, which allowed both runners to move up an extra base. Michael Lissman then doubled to left, scoring Thomas with the tying run, but Christian was forced to hold at third.

Dusty Napoleon reached on an infield single to short, but Christian was again forced to remain at third. Christian finally scored when the next hitter, Dante Love, flied out to center, with Lissman doubled off after being caught in a rundown trying to advance to third.

Yakima starter Ian Harrington was strong, allowing just two hits and a run in six innings. Alfredo Marte, who came on in the seventh, allowed the first three batters to reach in the eighth and took the loss.
