YAKIMA -- Needing just one victory in their next four games to assure themselves of a state berth, the Yakima Valley Pak took care of business quickly.
Jake Fife threw a complete-game seven-hitter, and Ryan Durkee backed that effort with a home run as Yakima Valley beat the Yakima Pepsi Beetles 6-2 in the first game of a Central Washington League Senior Legion doubleheader Sunday night at Parker Field.
Yakima won the nightcap 6-5, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh, but the earlier loss means the Beetles can finish no better than fourth in the league standings.
Yakima Valley, currently third, improved to 14-8 in league, and hold a four-game lead over the Beetles (9-12) with just two more games against Yakima tonight at Carlon Park in Selah.
The top three teams in the league automatically qualify for the 16-team state tournament.
Yakima (33-23 overall) remains in good position to finish either fourth or fifth, which would put them in a playoff to determine the league's fourth state berth.
In the opener, Cody Edwards was 3-for-4 with two doubles, and Dustin Daniels had two hits for the Pak (38-15 overall).
In the nightcap, Yakima won when Jose Meza's bases-loaded grounder to second was mishandled for an error, allowing the winning run to score.
