VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Runs have been hard to come by for most of this season for the Bears, but of late they've become even more scarce.
Yakima was shut out for the second time in three games Wednesday night, 4-0 by Vancouver before an announced crowd of 4,232 at Nat Bailey Stadium.
The defeat was the Bears' sixth in seven games and ninth in 11, dropping them to a Northwest League-worst 13-23. It was also their third loss of this five-game series, which concludes this afternoon at 1 before Yakima returns home Friday for a five-game set with Eugene.
The Canadians, who have scored fewer runs this season than the Bears (140 to 147), have managed only 14 runs in the series but have won three times. In Yakima's last five games, dating to a Saturday night loss to Spokane, it has totaled just six runs.
And this time, the Bears had precious few chances. They managed but three hits -- one a bunt single by David Cooper -- and earned only three walks.
They advanced a runner to third in the third inning when Brendan Duffy led off with a single and moved up on two groundouts, but was stranded by another infield out.
In the fourth, Anthony Smith doubled with two out, but Ryan Babineau was then called out on strikes.
Yakima had runners at first and second with one out in the fifth, via walks to Duffy and Greg Bordes, but Ariel Urena hit into a double play.
And in the sixth, Cooper stole second after his infield single, but was picked off. He was the last player to advance to scoring position for the Bears, who were retired in order over the final two innings.
Vancouver (15-21), meanwhile, gave starter Ronny Morla (1-3) and reliever Ben Hornbeck all the scoring they needed in the fourth inning against Yakima starter Ricardo Taveras (0-4).
After a one-out walk and hit batsman, Dusty Napoleon tripled to right field, hen scored on a throwing error by Smith. The Canadians added another run in the seventh on a bases-loaded walk to Napoleon by Jesus Cespedes.
