Guilty Pleasures -- Come share your pleasure with us

ON Magazine

If you're anything like Guilty Pleasures, you secretly love the Steve Miller Band.

Sure, in public, you turn up your snobbish nose at the idiotic lyrics of "The Joker," but if there's a jukebox within a 20-foot radius of your barstool, you just can't resist playing "Take the Money and Run." And in the car, you sing, loudly, the nonedited version of "Jet Airliner." (Funky "kicks" going down in the city, oh please.)

And, after much soul-searching, you forgave Steve for "Abracadabra" -- OK, there is no forgiveness for that terrible song.

Well friends, it's time to celebrate those things that give us so much pleasure but also make us so ashamed. Whether it's "Gossip Girl," Patrick Swayze movies, Hall & Oates, shopping at the dollar store or looking up old crushes on MySpace, we all have one.

So come down and share yours tonight at the second annual Guilty Pleasures Party, named, obviously, after this roving reporter of good times.

It begins about 9 p.m. at the Yakima Sports Center, 214 E. Yakima Ave., which has booked an evening of fine entertainment. The bill features Portland folkster Bryn Loosley, the return engagement of singer-songwriter Colin Spring -- who last year showed up with a whole set list of musical guilty pleasures -- and Chuck Prophet (see story on page 4).

Of course, there'll be a stack of "Hello My guilty pleasure is" name tags so you can wear yours with pride, plus we're setting up a "photo studio," so remember to wear a clean shirt.

A crisp $5 bill gets you into the party, but sorry, kids, it's 21 and older.

* Guilty Pleasures is a weekly look at whatever Guilty Pleasures wants to look at -- or listen to, even if it is the Steve Miller Band, who, by the way, will be playing Aug. 2 at the Gorge Amphitheatre with Joe Cocker.
